Expanded foam (polystyrene) baking system

The baking system is a complex system, optimally selected equipment with the necessary capacity and degree of automation, which allows to obtain quality expanded foam at the output according to GOST 15588-86.

After the end of the stabilization process, the foamed polystyrene crumb is feeded from the holding hopper (silos) into a block mould. The feeding process of the unit can be carried out in two methods: using the air flow (3-7 min.) or using vacuum (1 min.), that cuts the cycle time and increases the system capacity. In a block mould under pressure of steam, the granules stick together within 1–3 minutes into large blocks of a rectangular shape. Size of the blocks depends on a model of the block mould.

At this stage, the temperature, pressure and effect duration of steam have a direct impact on the quality of the finished block of expanded foam. The pressure that the block exerts on the inner walls of the molding chamber is approximately 0.08 MPa. In order to remove the block from the chamber, the pressure must be reduced to a value of about 0.01 MPa. For this purpose, the vacuum unit is applied.

The process takes from 0.5 to 7 minutes, depending on the grade of expanded foam, to reduce this time and, accordingly, increase the performance the vacuum accumulator is applied. About 20 kg of steam within 1-2 minutes is required for production of 1 m3 of the expanded foam, for this purpose, a steam generator and steam accumulator are used. The compressor is applied for operating of the whole pneumatic system and the pushing of finished block from the moulds on the draw table.
